THE ENERGY TRANSITION STARTS AT HOME
Solar panels, heat pumps, battery storage systems, and electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common, managing household energy can sometimes seem more complex or out of reach because of this. But many homeowners and renters already sucessfully generate electricity, store it, consume it, and even feed it back into the grid. To coordinate all these components efficiently, energy providers are increasingly relying on new ecosystems to manage all kinds of smart energy devices across a users home.
WHAT IS A HEMS?
A Home Energy Management System in short HEMS acts as the central control unit for connected energy devices within a household. It can monitor energy generation, consumption, storage, and charging processes while automatically making adjustments based on demand, weather forecasts, or electricity prices. It can save a ton of money. For many consumers, however, the technology behind these systems can feel abstract and difficult to understand. This creates a challenge for companies introducing innovative energy solutions to a wider audience.
EXPLAINING COMPLEX TECHNOLOGIES THROUGH ESSAY-STYLE STORYTELLING
For E.ON, the goal was to create an educational video that explains the concept of a HEMS in an accessible and engaging way so they teamed up with with the creator and moderator Philipp Dubbert ( Dr.Dubbert - YouTube / TikTok ). He's known for his explainer-shorts and video-essays. The production combines him in real-world footage with motion graphics. "Hey Eon" acts as the AI guiding the animated parts. It's the official name and role of the AI in E.ON's energy-app ecosystem. Rather than relying on technical terminology alone, the video guides viewers through practical scenarios that demonstrate how a connected home energy system can simplify energy-saving in everyday life. The blend of live-action and animation helps visualize processes that would otherwise remain invisible, such as energy flows, automated decisions, and device communication. Check out our BTS of the shoot:
COMBINING GREEN SCREEN FOOTAGE AND MOTION DESIGN WITH CUSTOM BACKGROUNDS
One of the strengths of modern corporate communication lies in combining multiple visual languages and communication channels within a single production. Scripted live-action footage with Philipp Dubbert was shot in front of a green screen explaining topics for homes, devices, and user situations. Motion graphics added clarity by visualizing data and system interactions. Shorter Stories for TikTok, Instagram and Youtube Shorts . The result is an explainer format designed for digital audiences who expect information to be concise, visual, and easy to understand.
EDUCATIONAL CONTENT FOR THE ENERGY LANDSCAPE OF THE FUTURE
Germany and Europe continue investing in renewable energy infrastructure, that's when consumer education becomes increasingly important. As Pricing for such systems has improved drastically, videos like these help bridge the gap between technological innovation and public understanding. By making advanced energy systems approachable through long- and shortform video, broader audiences become more aware of how smart energy management can support saving our planet and making sustainable energy more affordable.
E.ON HEMS doesn't force you into vendor lock-in either, it unofficially even plays well with the flexible open source platform Home Assistant which can connect your E.ON data to other smart home decives using custom community integrations and API's. So if tinkerers want to use more custom scheduling than the E.ON app offers, or connect to other unsupported third-party devices, it's possible right now.
The campaign generated an estimated 15–20 million cross-platform views across YouTube, Instagram Reels, and TikTok.
