THEATRE THAT THINKS IN IMAGES

Modern theatre is no longer confined to the stage. For contemporary institutions like the Münchner Volkstheater, storytelling begins long before opening night. Audiences discover productions online, through short-form video, trailers, and digital campaigns that translate stage language into cinematic form. This shift demands a new kind of visual communication: one that respects the integrity of theatre while speaking the language of film. Across the three productions, a shared visual direction emerges: minimalism, reduction, and futurism. Sets are often stripped back to essential structures. Spaces feel constructed rather than naturalistic. Light and shadow become narrative tools. For Glaube Liebe Roboter, Fischer Fritz, and Echtzeitalter, SPACED produced the official trailers, reels, and principal photography that introduced these productions to audiences online. Each project was captured in a single production day, delivering a complete suite of promotional content from shoot to final edit.

GLAUBE LIEBE ROBOTER – HUMANITY UNDER PRESSURE

Based on Ödön von Horváth’s original text (Glaube Liebe Hoffnung), Glaube Liebe Roboter by director Bonn Park explores the fragility of human existence within rigid social systems. For the trailer, the focus lies on emotional intensity and visual contrast. The world of the play is shaped by pressure, limitation, and systemic constraint - elements that translate powerfully into tightly framed compositions and controlled movement. Also ROBOTS! Rather than summarizing the narrative, the trailer distills its emotional core: a human being navigating an environment that offers little space for survival.

FISCHER FRITZ – BETWEEN HUMOR AND REALITY

In Fischer Fritz by director Asena Yeşim Lappas, everyday life, care work, and family dynamics merge into a humorous yet deeply grounded portrait of generational tension and dependency. The trailer captures this duality by balancing observational realism with moments of stylized rhythm. Performative fragments, dialogue-driven scenes, and subtle shifts in tone reflect the play’s ability to move between comedy and emotional truth within seconds. Visually, the world remains intimate - close to the characters, close to their contradictions.

ECHTZEITALTER – A WORLD IN TRANSITION

Echtzeitalter by director Jan Friedrich presents a contemporary reflection on systems, perception, and modern acceleration. Its staging embraces a distinctly futuristic aesthetic, where environments feel abstracted, digital, and structurally reduced. The trailer approach mirrors this sensibility through pacing, fragmentation, and spatial abstraction. Instead of linear storytelling, the focus lies on atmosphere: a world in motion, shaped by uncertainty and technological presence. The result is a visual language that feels closer to speculative cinema than traditional theatre documentation.

TRAILER PRODUCTION AS A DIGITAL LAYER FOR THEATRE

As theatre increasingly exists across both physical and digital spaces, trailers like these form an essential bridge between audience and stage. They extend the life of a production beyond the auditorium and create entry points for new viewers who may first encounter the work online. For institutions like the Münchner Volkstheater, this evolution is not a departure from tradition - but an expansion of how theatre can be seen, shared, and experienced.
